Filial Therapy for Parents
Often the best person to help a child heal is the parent. In filial therapy I teach parents play therapy skills that can be implemented at home. Parents take these skills to do a weekly “special playtime” that builds connection, emotional expression, and stronger family relationships.
-
In filial therapy I help parents to learn play therapy skills that can be used in one-on-one play sessions with kids at home, called “special playtime”.
Filial therapy is an evidence based treatment for a wide variety of mental health issues in children including:
Emotional Challenges: Anxiety, depression, emotional dysregulation, aggression
Trauma and Major Life Changes: Grief, adjusting to divorce/remarriage, domestic violence
Attachment: Adoption or foster care, parent incarceration, attachment disorders
Developmental and Medical Conditions: Autism, ADHD, chronic illness
-
Filial therapy can be done virtually or in person, or a mix of both.
Filial consists of 2 parts: parent education meetings and play observation.
For parent meetings, we can meet over online or in my Decatur office. For play observation, parents can record at home sessions or play with kids in my office. Eventually we transition to home based playtime, but many parents find it helpful to start in the office first.
We’ll work together to create a schedule that works for your family’s needs.

My office is located inside the Decatur Psychotherapy Group offices in the Decatur/Tucker area at the intersection of Montreal Road and Lawrenceville Highway.

The first step is to book a free new client consultation. This can be done over the phone or a video call.
We’ll talk about why you’re looking for therapy and I’ll share about my process and availability.
If we feel like it’s a good fit, we’ll get you set up for an intake session. If we feel it’s not a good fit, I will provide a few referrals for therapists that better fit your needs.
